Ultra thin glass with increased UV-transmission

Special Properties

  • Ultra thin standard thicknesses
  • Very low micro roughness
    (typical ≤ 0,5 nm / RFA-measurement)
  • High UVB transmissivity
  • Very good infrared transmission
  • Low total thickness variation (TTV)
  • Suited for chemical strengthening
  • Drastically improved mechanical strength after chemical strengthening
  • Toughened glass stays flexible
  • Produced environment friendly

Typical Applications

  • Speciality cover slips for research & science
  • Cover glass for display technology
  • Sensor glass covers
  • Advanced ultra thin glass applications
  • Glass for electronics
  • Automotive glass applications

The new aluminosilicate glass AS 87 eco has been added to the extensive delivery program of our company in 2017. It allows a wide range of special technical applications that require an ultra thin glass material. The SCHOTT glass is available at a thickness range of 50 to 350 µm at very low tolerances. A very good UV-permeability especially in the UV-B range, which is superior to that of most other ultra thin glass materials, should be emphasized. Although the transmission of ultraviolet light is not quite as high as that of quartz glass with UV-quality, such ultra thin quartz glass substrates at very low thicknesses can often not be manufactured at reasonable cost. The transmissivity of AS 87 eco at a thickness of 175 microns still reaches 80 % at 290 nm and even at 250 nm there still is a transmission of approximately 40 % available. But also in the infrared range this new glass material offers a high transmissivity of greater than 90 % in the range from 350-2700 nm at 175 µm.

Even fragile, non-strengthened, ultra thin AS87 eco glass at 0,05 mm thickness is flexible within certain limits and thinner than a sheet of paper.

AS 87 eco ultra thin glass can be used as a high-quality, ultra thin cover slip for applications in science and research. But also the use as a display cover glass, protection glass for sensor electronics or for finger print sensors are common applications for this new ultra thin glass material. For display technology and any use that requires an increased mechanical stability, the glass can be chemically strengthened by using an ion exchange treatment. By chemical strengthening, the glass becomes more flexible and obtains a high level of bending strength, mechanical impact resistance and scratch resistance. Please send us a separate request in case you need a chemically strengthened version of glass parts made of AS 87 eco. Unless otherwise specified, all specifications and details in this data sheet are given for the untempered glass without chemical strengthening. The "eco" in the glass name means, that only environment friendly refining agents have been used for the production of this glass.

In 2017, our company has developed a new CNC-cutting technology for ultra thin glass. Using this advanced process, we can even manufacture and deliver square and rectangle parts at only 50 microns glass thickness within our 48h-Express Services.
